The forecast fields are outretrieved from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model’s internal grid (D03), with a spatial resolution of 1.667km x 1.667km. Forecasts of the model are depicted on a 0.016 x 0.016 degrees grid, covering the entire Thermaikos Gulf area, and are grouped inside a GRIB file that can be used by the respective software and applications.

The GRIB files are provided and updated on a daily basis by the Department of Meteorology and Climatology, School of Geology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and are free for use during the 470 World Championships 2017 (7-15 July).

Filenaming

Filenames follow the pattern AUTH-DMC_WRF_d03_12zDDMMYY.grb, where:

  • DD = date of initial time
  • MM = month of initial time
  • YY = year of initial time.
  • 12z = Initialization time (initial input data) is at 12:00 UTC

Data

Each GRIB file contains hourly forecasts for a period starting at 12 forecast hours (at 00 UTC) and extending to the following 96 forecasting hours. Each forecasting hour contains instantaneous values for each field, except precipitation, whose value is the cumulative result between the initial time and the current forecasting hour.
